Project Overview
We offer many types of energy and commissioning services including monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx), for all types of facilities. San Diego State was interested in performing MBCx for the College of Arts and Letters, a multi-tower, six-story building of approximately 115,000 SF that contains classrooms, lecture halls and offices.

Solution
We analyzed the building systems and recommended several energy conservation measures (ECMs) to the university. We worked with campus facilities staff and controls contractors to implement the selected measures. After implementation, the building’s energy consumption fell by approximately 30%, which translated to a utility cost savings of nearly $40,000 per year! The results were so extraordinary that the project was awarded the 2015 Best Practice Award for Monitoring-Based Commissioning by the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC). Accolades aside, we think the ongoing energy savings, incentives and reduced environmental impact are equally important.
