Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center:

Driving Efficiency & Sustainability with Infrastructure Upgrades

Collaborating with Partners to Build Future-Ready Facilities

P2S partnered with Kaiser Permanente to upgrade Baldwin Park Medical Center's Mechanical and Plumbing infrastructure and improve energy efficiency. This project spanned the central utility plant, hospital, and medical office building, targeting long-term performance, sustainability, and patient comfort.

Precision with 3D Laser Scanning

Using laser scanning, our team created 3D models of key infrastructure areas, ensuring precise design and integration of new systems with minimal disruption. These high-resolution models allow us to precisely design and integrate new systems with minimal disruption, providing seamless upgrades to support the facility’s demanding needs.

Sustainable System Replacements & Energy Optimization

We designed upgrades to reduce the building’s Energy Use Intensity (EUI) from 230 to 160, including:

  • Heat Recovery Chiller and Flue Heat Recovery: Captured waste heat for domestic hot water and HVAC reheats.
  • Variable Air Volume (VAV) Conversion: The operating rooms have been shifted to an efficient, responsive VAV system. When unoccupied, airflow is reduced.
  • Split Deck Dual Duct System: Improved efficiency by optimizing supply air temperature with separate outside air for cold and hot air decks and minimizing reheat.
  • Reduced Airflow: Turn airflow off completely at night and on weekends for unoccupied areas.

Smart Control with DDC Systems

A new Direct Digital Control (DDC) system was designed to integrate HVAC and plumbing functions across the campus, automating energy use and reducing maintenance demands. This technology-driven approach enables proactive management, monitoring, and adjustments to maximize efficiency and resilience.
